Cryopreservation of sperm is a procedure in which obtained samples of sperm or testicular tissue are stored in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C. At an appropriate time, the samples of sperm or testicular tissue are thawed and used in assisted reproduction procedures.
The procedure is applied with the aim of preserving fertility and planning offspring in circumstances that require postponement of reproduction.
Cryopreservation is also used in cases of oncological diseases, the treatment of which may affect male fertility.
Thus, there are both medical and non-medical reasons for storing semen.
