Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
About
CRRT is a slow and continuous form of dialysis used in intensive care units for patients with acute kidney failure and unstable vital signs. Unlike standard dialysis, it works around the clock to gently remove waste, balance fluids, and correct electrolytes. In Croatia, CRRT is available in advanced hospital settings equipped with 24/7 monitoring.
Candidate
Patients in critical condition, such as those in septic shock, cardiac instability, or multi-organ failure, often require CRRT as an emergency intervention.
Preparation
This treatment is only performed in ICU settings. Patients arriving from abroad in critical condition are stabilized first and may transition to CRRT depending on their diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment is fully managed by ICU teams and nephrologists. Patients are usually sedated or unconscious during therapy. Blood is slowly circulated through a specialized machine that filters waste continuously.
Result
CRRT helps stabilize blood pressure, reduce fluid overload, and support the body while kidney function is temporarily or permanently compromised.
Precautions
Requires hospitalization and intensive monitoring. Anticoagulants are used to prevent clotting in the machine.
