D-dimers
About
D-dimers are breakdown products of fibrinogen, specifically fibrin clots. Elevated levels of D-dimers indicate increased clot formation. This test is important for diagnosing disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and acute vascular conditions, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.
Candidate
You need this test if you have symptoms of deep vein thrombosis (such as leg pain, swelling, warmth, changes in skin color, redness) or pulmonary embolism (including severe chest pain, shortness of breath, a feeling of air hunger, and palpitations). It is also recommended if you are taking oral contraceptives or suspect a thromboembolic disease.
Preparation
No special preparation is needed.
Treatment
To determine D-dimer levels, blood is drawn from a vein.
Result
The results are available within 1 hour.
