About

Blood type refers to the characteristics (antigens) present on the surface of red blood cells, or erythrocytes. There are 4 blood types in the ABO system (A, B, AB, or O). If the Rh antigen is present on the erythrocytes, the person has Rh-positive blood; if the Rh antigen is absent, the person has Rh-negative blood. Determining the Rh factor is particularly important for pregnant women due to the risk of Rh sensitization during pregnancy.

Blood received through transfusion must be of the same blood type as the recipient (the donor's and recipient's blood must be compatible) to avoid an immune response or transfusion reaction, which can have serious health consequences for the recipient. Whenever blood type is determined, a test for the presence of anti-erythrocyte antibodies in the blood is also conducted. Blood type remains consistent throughout a person's life, while the presence of anti-erythrocyte antibodies can vary.
