AST/ASO
About
Antistreptolysin (AST/ASO) is an antibody produced in response to a specific toxin created by bacteria from the Streptococcus group A.
A high titer of this antibody in the blood indicates that the person is infected with the bacteria. If the initial infection (such as a sore throat) is not treated, complications like rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis may develop.
Candidate
AST/ASO testing is performed if a doctor suspects complications from a previously acquired streptococcal infection or an ongoing infection. This includes symptoms such as elevated body temperature, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, joint pain and swelling, skin rash, difficulty urinating, and others.
Preparation
No special preparation is required.
Treatment
For the AST/ASO test, a blood sample is taken from a vein.
Result
Results are available the same day.
