The new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) causes the disease COVID-19, which presents with symptoms of acute respiratory infection (a sudden onset of at least one of the following symptoms – cough, elevated body temperature, shortness of breath) or a sudden loss of smell, taste, or changes in taste. Some patients may experience mild and nonspecific symptoms such as headache, joint and/or muscle pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal disturbances, with or without elevated body temperature.
This test is a molecular diagnostic assay for detecting active infection with the new coronavirus by identifying viral RNA.
Candidate
The test is conducted when symptoms appear and there is suspicion of infection, before surgical procedures, for international travel requirements, when there is suspected exposure based on a doctor's recommendation, and for other reasons.
Preparation
No special preparation is required.
Treatment
For this test, a throat swab (nasopharyngeal swab) is collected. Prior appointment is required. In Zagreb and Split, swab collection is organized as a drive-in service.
Result
Test results are available within 24 hours of collecting the swab.
