Tumor Markers for Men
About
In men, tumor markers are used for the early detection of specific types of cancer as well as for monitoring the effectiveness of treatment.
The most important tumor markers for men include:
- PSA (prostate-specific antigen) – Essential for the early detection of prostate cancer. Elevated PSA levels may indicate cancer but can also result from benign prostate conditions such as enlargement or inflammation (prostatitis).
- CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) – Used to monitor colorectal cancer, as well as lung, pancreatic, and stomach cancers.
- Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) – Used for diagnosing testicular tumors and certain liver cancers.
- Beta-HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) – Helps diagnose certain testicular tumors.
- LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) – Useful as a nonspecific marker for testicular tumors and for monitoring disease progression.
Regular monitoring of these markers is especially recommended for men over the age of 50, as well as younger men with a family history of prostate or testicular cancer.
