Vitamin D
About
Candidate
You should consider this test if your calcium, phosphorus, and/or parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels are outside the reference range, if you show signs of bone disease or bone weakness, if your doctor suspects you might have a vitamin D deficiency, if you are starting treatment for osteoporosis or addressing a vitamin D deficiency. Additionally, if you are at high risk for vitamin D deficiency (older age, poor dietary habits, chronic digestive disorders with malabsorption, insufficient sun exposure throughout the year, etc.), testing is recommended.
Preparation
You need to fast for this test. If you are consuming juices or multivitamin supplements, you should stop taking them at least 7 days before testing for vitamin D. NOTE for individuals on vitamin D therapy: Before performing a follow-up test for vitamin D, at least 7 days should have passed since the end of the therapy.
Treatment
For testing vitamin D levels in the body, a blood sample is taken from a vein.
Result
Results are available the same day.
