Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Candidates for laparoscopic cholecystectomy are typically patients who have gallstones, inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), or other issues with the gallbladder. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is usually recommended for patients who are in generally good health and do not have serious complications.

Before laparoscopic cholecystectomy, patients will usually undergo a thorough examination to confirm the diagnosis and assess suitability for surgery. This may include a physical examination, abdominal ultrasound, blood tests, and other tests as needed. Preparation may also involve discontinuation of certain medications or dietary changes.

During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the surgeon accesses the gallbladder through several small incisions in the abdominal wall. Through these incisions, laparoscopic instruments, including a camera that allows the surgeon to view the inside of the abdominal cavity on a monitor, are inserted. The surgeon then carefully removes the gallbladder using these instruments.

The results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy are usually very good. Recovery after this procedure is typically faster compared to traditional open cholecystectomy. Patients can expect a reduction in symptoms associated with gallbladder issues and an improvement in quality of life.

After laparoscopic cholecystectomy, patients should follow their surgeon's instructions to ensure successful recovery. This may include limiting activities during the first few days, taking prescribed pain medications, and monitoring for symptoms of complications such as infections or bleeding.
