HCG blood test

About

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced in very small amounts by the pituitary gland (in both sexes from 2 to 4 IU/L) and in significant amounts by the placenta during pregnancy. Around 15 days after conception, hCG enters the bloodstream and urine of the pregnant woman, where it can be measured. Therefore, hCG is an ideal early indicator of pregnancy. After confirming pregnancy, monitoring hCG levels in the pregnant woman’s blood every 2 days can help track the progress and outcome of the pregnancy.

Candidate

When confirming pregnancy, hCG should be measured after the expected menstrual period has been missed. If hCG is tested too early (for example, immediately after intercourse or ovulation), false-negative results may occur. In such cases, the hCG test should be repeated after 7 to 14 days.

Preparation

For the test, no special preparation is required except knowing the date of your last menstrual period (the first day of your last menstrual bleeding).

Treatment

For this test, blood is drawn from a vein. If hCG is measured in urine, it is best to provide a sample of the first morning urine. The test can also be performed using a random urine sample collected during the day, but it is important to reduce fluid intake beforehand (excessively diluted urine can yield false-negative results). Measuring hCG in blood is more reliable than in urine.

Result

Results are available the same day.

I came to ZagrebMed for a blood test to confirm my pregnancy and they were SO helpful. The language barrier was not an issue at all, and after chatting to them i was able to get an appointment within a couple of hours. Once i got to the clinic it was immaculately presented , once again with very helpful staff and i was seen straight away. So efficient- i was in and out in 10 minutes … and had my results in two hours! A fantastic service that i would highly recommend. Thank you !
