Epicutaneous Test – Patch Test

About

The epicutaneous test, also known as the patch test, is used to diagnose contact dermatitis in children, a type of allergic skin reaction caused by exposure to specific substances or allergens. This test is a non-invasive method where small amounts of potential allergens are applied to the child’s skin using special patches to determine if these substances trigger allergic reactions.

The patches are typically placed on the child’s back or upper arm and remain for about 48 hours. After this period, the skin is examined for any reactions such as redness, swelling, or rash, which may indicate an allergic response. Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled to monitor skin reactions over the next few days.

The patch test is used to identify allergies to chemicals, metals, perfumes, preservatives, or other substances found in personal care products, clothing, or environmental factors. It does not diagnose inhalant or food allergies, focusing solely on contact allergies.

This test is vital for identifying allergens and preventing further exposure, thus helping with treatment and improving the child’s quality of life.
