Lumbosacral Spine Ultrasound in Infants

About

Ultrasound of the lumbosacral spine in infants is a non-invasive diagnostic method used to examine the lower part of the spine and surrounding tissues in newborns. This method allows doctors to assess anatomical abnormalities, including spinal dysraphia (incomplete closure of the spinal canal), lipoma (fatty build-up) and other structural abnormalities.

Ultrasound of the lumbosacral spine is safe, painless and is performed using high-frequency sound waves that create an image of the lower part of the spine. This examination is usually recommended for newborns with signs such as a dimple or depression in the lower back area, malformations or unusual skin changes above the spine.

The examination does not require special preparation, and the results help in the early detection of conditions that may affect the child's neurological development.
