Evoked Otoacoustic Emission Test in Babies

About

The evoked otoacoustic emission (OAE) test is a simple, non-invasive, and painless procedure used to assess hearing in newborns and infants. This test helps detect potential hearing impairments at the earliest age, which is crucial for a child's early development, especially in terms of speech and language.

Otoacoustic emissions are sound waves produced by the outer hair cells in the inner ear (cochlea) in response to acoustic stimulation. The test allows doctors to check the function of the inner ear and identify any disorders.

Treatment

During the test, the baby can be asleep or in a calm state. A small probe is placed in the outer ear canal, which emits sounds and measures the response from the inner ear. The procedure only takes a few minutes, causes no discomfort or pain, and is often performed as part of a routine newborn screening in hospitals.

Result

Early detection of hearing loss is extremely important for a child's development. Suppose hearing problems are identified within the first few months of life. In that case, timely intervention through hearing aids or other therapies can be provided, ensuring the child achieves optimal speech, language, and communication skills.
