Breast ultrasound

Candidates for breast ultrasound typically include women who have suspicious changes or lumps in the breasts. This examination often becomes relevant if additional investigation is needed after mammography or as the first step in the evaluation for women under 30, pregnant or lactating women.

In most cases, preparation for breast ultrasound is not required. The patient may need to remove clothing from the upper part of the body, and it may be requested not to use deodorant or lotion on the breast area to improve contact with the ultrasound probe.

Patient's position: The patient usually lies on her back during the examination. Application of gel: Gel is applied to the breast area to improve contact between the skin and the ultrasound probe. Ultrasound examination: The doctor or ultrasound technician uses an ultrasound probe to capture images of the internal structures of the breasts.

The results of the breast ultrasound help doctors assess the structure of changes in the breasts and determine if further investigation is necessary. Breast ultrasound can provide more detailed information about nodules, cysts, or other changes that may be detected by mammography.

After breast ultrasound examination, special precautions are usually not necessary. The patient can return to her regular activities. It is important to follow the doctor's instructions regarding further treatment or monitoring, depending on the examination results.
